What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a kind of "cap" in the shape of a tooth that is worn on top of an existing and damaged tooth (for example after deep and large root canal treatment) or which is installed inside a dental implant implanted in the gums for the purpose of replacing missing teeth and restoring the smile. The crown is a functional and aesthetic replacement for the tooth and allows the patient to chew and eat normally. Cases where there is a need to use a dental crown include for example:

  1. Protect a weak and damaged tooth so that it will not break or crack.
  2. Restore the appearance and function of a broken or cracked tooth.
  3. Cover, protect, and support teeth damaged by decay, which have large holes and very large fillings with very little natural tooth material left (after root canal treatment).
  4. To hold a dental bridge in place.
  5. For concealing a very crooked tooth or one that has significant staining on it. As an alternative tooth connection to a dental implant.
  6. To perform an aesthetic procedure to restore the smile and improve the appearance of the teeth.

The essence of porcelain/porcelain dental crowns

Porcelain dental crowns / porcelain crowns‍

In the past, different types of metals have been used to produce dental crowns, but this has negative aspects both aesthetically and functionally, and health-wise. Porcelain crowns also called porcelain crowns in Hebrew, are currently the most commonly used crowns, due to a combination of strength, durability, chewing function, aesthetic appearance, and cost. A porcelain crown offers a natural and white look of a real tooth and it also allows for normal eating, just as if it were a natural tooth that you always had in your mouth and in excellent condition.

There are several types of porcelain crowns for teeth, and what they all have in common is the use of dedicated and special porcelain for the production of the crown:

Porcelain crowns in which a porcelain coating is applied on top of a crown of non-noble metal
Porcelain crowns in which the outer coating is porcelain/porcelain and inside The crown is made of non-noble metal combined with noble metal
Dental crowns containing an external and internal porcelain veneer made of noble metal, such as gold, palladium, or platinum
Full porcelain crowns – advanced dental crowns made only of special compressed porcelain and without metal
Porcelain and zirconia crowns – Crowns that contain a zirconia base and porcelain veneer
